Apple Watch Series 6 Worth The Money

I’m an Apple Watch user since the first version. I’ve never bought the first version second hand. Now I wear a new Apple Watch 4 since it’s launched.

Last September Apple revealed the new shiny Apple Watch 6!

But, I didn’t think it was so shiny.

Well, I love getting newer and better gadgets. But I won’t spend any money upgrading my Apple Watch 4 to the Apple Watch 6. Here is why you should keep your money 💰 in your pocket.

Difference between Apple Watch Series 4, 5 and 6

If you go to the Apple website, you will notice that the only difference between the Apple Watch 4, 5, and 6 is the following.

  • Version 5 has an Always-On Retina display like the 6. But version 4 doesn’t have it.
  • U1 chip (Ultra Wideband) is only in series 6.
  • S6 chip is only in series 6 because series 5 has the S5 like series 4 has the S4.
  • The blood oxygen sensor is only in series 6. The series 4 and 5 include an electrical and optical (second generation) heart sensor.
  • The always-on altimeter is on series 6, SE, and SE.
  • 32GB of storage is only on series 6 and 5. Series 4 includes 16GB.

For the rest, all the features are the same. Not a lot of differences if you ask me.

Why You Would Want To Upgrade?

Since there is not a lot of difference between series 4, 5, and 6, the question you want to ask yourself. Why would I upgrade my Apple Watch?

If you have the series 1, 2 or 3

Yes, you want to upgrade if you have an Apple Watch this old 🙈. When you upgrade, your choice should be between series 4, 5, SE, or 6.

No matter to which version you upgrade, you going to benefit from the speed, screen size, and battery life. I was so happy after upgrading from series 2 to series 4.

If you don’t want to spend that big buck, check for a refurbished series 4 or 5. But if you don’t need the ECG functionality, you probably want to consider the Apple Watch SE.

The price of the SE starts around $269 for the 40mm and $293.55 for the 44mm on Amazon.

If you want to have a watch that is the best of the best at the moment, then picking a series 6 is the best choice.

The price of the Series 6 start around $374.98 for the 40mm and $429 for the 44mm on Amazon.

If you have the series 4

When you have the series 4, the reason why you want to upgrade is the speed for a newer and faster chip, Always-on display, blood oxygen sensor, always-on altimeter, and a newer version of the optical heart sensor.

Upgrading to series 5 wouldn’t make sense if you have series 4. Better spend that extra money on the series 6 for the faster S6 chip and the blood oxygen sensor.

If you have series 5: NO!

When You Shouldn’t Upgrade?

I can come up with even more clear reasons why you don’t want to upgrade. But especially if you have a series 4 or 5. At that point, I won’t recommend upgrading.

  1. An always-on display sounds cool but will impact your battery life during the day.
  2. The new always-on altimeter is nice if you do hiking or climbing a mountain. But I don’t see the point when you don’t climb that much.
  3. A newer version of the heart sensor can be nice, but not a point for spending so much money on the series 6.

Conclusion

I’m an Apple Watch Series 4 user, but I won’t spend that money for a minimal upgrade to the series 6. If you don’t have an Apple Watch like my wife, I would order an Apple Watch SE.

With the Apple Watch SE, you get the same S6 chip, which makes it as fast as the series 6. The only thing is, you don’t have the option to do an ECG.

Hopefully if you this post has helped you decide if you want to upgrade to the shiny new Apple Watch Series 6 or not.
